"R. R. Thomas" under oath, say I came ashore from the "R. R.
Thomas 12: on February 15th. to be paid off at the 0. S. Consulate
by the Captain by "Mutual Consent," That on said day I met the
Rev. Iliff of Sailors' Hone and he advised me to go before the
Police Magistrate and nake charges against the first Mate of
"R. R. Thomas" (Patton) for mild assault. The said Iliff
gave me a letter to Captain May and he, Captain May, did all that
was necessary. I charged the Mate with cruel treatment and be
(the Mate) was sentenced by the Magistrate to six weeks at hard
labour. On which day (Feb. 18th.)
to the U. 3. Consul and requested a discharge on ground of
reported, for the first time,
cruel
treatment," The Consul ordered me to return to my ship until such
charge could be investigated as no formal charge had been lodged
at the Consulate. I did not return to duty as ordered but
deserted said ship.
On February 25th. I was arrested as a
deserter by the local police and discharged on same day. I was
